Greeting to you all,

1. As you might know, on Friday, April 18, 2008, we lost our son, brother, cousin, and friend… Boris Ivshin. Boris was just 18 years old and died in an automobile accident coming home from work after completing his night shift with an ambulance company in Los Angeles. (For details on his passing, check the web. Just please note that his age is not accurately provided.)

2. Now, we are writing to let you know of the following two memorial events being held to commemorate Boris’ life. The events will be held on May 11 and May 18. For the description of the services, locations, and other logistics we have set up a website to keep you informed. Please visit: www.borisivshin.com

3. The website will be updated regularly in order to bring you information as it develops. Please check it frequently. We hope that you will understand that we are all doing the best we can in this difficult time, and the website is not as beautiful as we would like. However, we are making every attempt to post his pictures and stories about him as soon as possible and keep his memory alive.

4. If you would like to attend, participate, speak, volunteer, or help in any way in organizing and conducting the event on May 18, please call Daniil Ivshin at (323) 337-3411 or Ella Ivshin at (323) 823-7772 or email to may2008event@gmail.com

P.S. You have our permission to invite to this event anyone who you think should be there. We trust that you understand how difficult to keep everyone and everything in mind for us at this time. Therefore your effort in letting the “right” people know is truly appreciated. We trust your judgment. In order to keep everyone updated and informed, please refer them to www.borisivshin.com. Thank you and God Bless.

Description: This memorial event is created with two goals in mind. First and foremost, it is about honoring Boris’s life, celebrating his essence and the lives that he touched. Therefore, if you would like to participate in this part, you are welcome to bring any stories or memories about him that you would like to share. If you would like to speak at this event, please let us know so we can include you in the program. Boris’s friends are a very big part of organizing and creating the event in order to bring to the event as much of his spirit as we can.

This event will done on a “community” level. Therefore, a second layer to this memorial is about conveying a strong message regarding the choices that we make in life. The emphasis of the message will be on choosing a sober life and making sober choices. There are several organizations that may wish to participate, including: West Hollywood Mayor’s Office, LA County Fire Department, LA County Sheriff’s Department, Chabad of LA, MADD and others as well.

We are still in the middle of organizing and setting this up. We don’t know what exactly will happen and at what level, but there is a possibility that it will be televised or at least taped. So even during the time of this event, Boris will continue to contribute to the beauty and joy of our planet, as he did in his life.

This coming Sunday there will be a Shloshim Memorial Service dedicated to Boruch Chayam Nochum (Boris) Ivshin.

Date: Sunday, May 11, 2008
Time: 7:30 pm
Location: Chabad of Pasadena
1090 E. Walnut Street
Pasadena, CA 91106

Please RSVP for the event by e-mailing may2008event@gmail.com. We need to keep count so we can plan the amount of chairs and other logistics for the event.

Description: This service is created in accordance with the Jewish law. It will include reading certain religious texts and be followed by sharing stories and memories of Boruch. The service is being held in the temple that he attended in the last several months. It will be mainly a spiritual event. You are welcome to come and join us in celebrating his life. This event will have a more “family” feel.

Since Boris’s time of passing fell on Friday, April 18, and was pressing on Shabbat, with Passover right afterward, we were not able to hold a memorial service at that time. With G-d’s help we were able to have the funeral service on the same day, which was attended by many of his closest friends, relatives, and many Rabbis.

This was a miracle in itself, since everything happened at lightning speed, with most people having less than two hours notice and right before Shabbat. Almost within 12 hours, Boris was laid to rest on 04/18/08 at 3:30 pm at Mt. Olive Memorial Park, 7231 E. Slauson Avenue, Los Angeles,  CA 90040-3624.

From the evening of April 18 to April 27, we were not allowed to grieve, in congruence with Jewish law. We had only 90 minutes of allowed grief, which is usually 7 days. In order to do things “by the Book,” and in our attempt to honor Boris’ soul and life, we as a family celebrated and attended Passover services, as we had planned to prior to the accident, with tickets that Boris had reserved for our family. We did the best we could at that time.

His friends were very supportive and understanding of the Jewish Law and on the April 22 they came to our front lawn, where they were able to, one more time, hang around with Boris’s spirit. It was marvelous to see so many beautiful souls gathering in front of our house to remember, celebrate and enjoy our son, brother and their friend. We are still in awe of their strength, bravery and compassion. It’s no wonder that they all were Boris’ friends.

And now we are allowed to grieve as well. May 11 marks the end of the first 30 days of grieving. This date is calculated according to the count by “the book” and is letting us move to another level of life and grief.  May 18 is mathematically 30 days since his passing.

Therefore, we would like to invite you to participate in these memorial events for Boris, where you can grieve, celebrate, and honor his essence and his life at the same time.

For detailed information in regards to the upcoming memorial event go to the “Memorial Info” catagory

There are so many of you who asked us the same question “What can we do for you?” and “how can we help” ? We truly appreciate your notes and gift baskets and phone calls and flowers and hugs and tears  and food and everything else that we received form all of you.  We treasure them all as we treasure your friendship, compassion and love that you are sharing with us at this challenging time. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

In addition,

~In honor and celebration of Boruch’s life and keeping his spirit alive;

~In respect and appreciation for those who are reaching out with support, love and compassion, whether they are able to attend the ceremony or not, and;

~In accordance with Jewish Law: No flowers please (for the ceremony on May 11);
